Worcester SA

Worcester airfield is in the Western Cape province of South Africa in the centre of the Breede Rivar Valley and is home to the Cape Gliding club.

Worcester is an arid location, often hot and windy, giving excelent soaring opportuinities. The area is central to some spectacular mountian chains which offers ridge flying all year round.

Winds are generally from the South East (a shallow, low-level wind) or North West (a wind which extends to great height), and both produce ridge lift. Northerly winds also produce lee-wave conditions.

All glider circuits should be commenced at 1000 feet (above ground) / 330m / 1650’ AMSL, and should be on the Northern side of the airfield (this is the town side). This means a right hand circuit for RWY 33 and left hand circuit for RWY 15

Airspace at Worcester

Worcester airfield (FAWC) is situated 10km inside the Cape Town TMA. Airspace in this portion of the TMA is uncontrolled up to FL85. Outside the TMA airspace is uncontrolled up to FL145.

CCS2004 Slope Files

Ivan Rogers has compiled a set of slope data files for CCS2004 so you can also enjoy ridge soaring in the mountains to the North of Worcester.

Suggested Tasks

All of these tasks use the ridge to the north as part of one or more of the legs. To make best use of the ridge, set the wind in flight simulator to 180/17kts. Thermal cloud base in your thermal generating program can be set to 6000ft and upwards.

FSX users make sure your CumulusX! ridge lift is ticked in your CumulusX! contol panel.
FS9 users using CCS2004 ensure that the slope files are installed in your CCS2004/Slope data folder.

General Task 1 367km

Starting from Worcester FAWC take the mountain ridge east-south-east to TP SWL Swell Corner then east to TP DNK Dankbaar. You will then need to come off the ridge and find some thermals north east to TP Bop then proceed on the last leg west back to Worcester.

General Task 2 256km

This is a similar triangle to Task 1 but shorter. Starting from Worcester FAWC take the mountain ridge east to TP MDD Middelrug then east-south-east to TP MKL Meeuklip. You will then need to come off the ridge and find some thermals north to TP Bop then proceed on the last leg west back to Worcester.

General Task 3 218km

Starting from Worcester FAWC take the mountain ridge east to TP MDD Middelrug then east-south-east to TP MKL Meeuklip. You will then need to come off the ridge and find some thermals west to TP MCG Mcgregor then proceed on the last leg north west back to Worcester.

General Task 4 108km

Starting from Worcester FAWC proceed to the TP KRM keerom just to the north east then take the mountain ridge east-south-east to TP MDD Middelrug. You will then need to either come off the ridge and find some thermals or take the ridge back to Worcester.

General Task 5 503km

This task is a long distance one, could be good for getting the Gold badge endurance
Starting from Worcester FAWC proceed to the mountain ridge and take all the turn points along the ridge east to TP RTR Ruiter and track back along the same course back to Worcester.

League Task 6 80km (Approx task time 55min)

For a bit of a competitive element a shortish 80km course has been created. Try to get around in the quickiest possible time. You can do this course as many times as you like, this is a great way of trying to improve your gliding performance.
Practise using the McCreedy settings.
Think about spending most of your time in thermals (rising air) and less time between them (sinking air). Think about what else you can do to improve your performance.

Starting from Worcester FAWC proceed to the TP Worcester North (TP N1) just to the north east then take the mountain ridge east-south-east to TP ROB Robspur. You will then need to come off the ridge and find some thermals east towards TP Nekkies then head north-north-east across the Brandvlei Dam back to Worcester.

You can take a winch or aerotow upto 2000ft AGL for this task.

The task actually starts on the ridge at TP N1, so after the launch at FAWC, take a thermal up so you can make the ridge.

Points awarded will go into a league table which will be continually updated as pilots improve their scores. The score will be based on the BGA ladder.
