Austrian Alps

The Alps is a popular soaring location in Europe providing excellent soaring conditions and offering lots of ridge soaring and thermal activity within this beautiful mountainous area. The place we have decided upon is Wolfsberg (LOKW) situated near the town of Lavanttal in the south eastern part of Austria. Wolfsberg is a small G.A airfield and is currently hosting the 2010 Hang gliding world masters.

Airspace Rules

Most uncontrolled airspace in Austria has an upper limit of 12,500ft msl, above this it is normally Class D. Take special attention to TMA's and CTR's near larger airports as most airspace is subject to ATC approval. Glider flights above 12,500ft msl will need to obtain approval from ATC to enter class D airspace.

CCS2004 Slope Files

Ivan Rogers has compiled a set of slope data files for CCS2004 so you can also enjoy ridge soaring in the Austrian Alps.

Hang Glider

We will be hosting an informal Hang Glider event on one of the AGL evenings. The files below will place your H.G. to the east Wolfsberg on the side of the mountain so that you can get a good run up for launching.

The pre-saved flight will load up in pause mode, when you are ready to go just un-pause and the pilot will start to run, let the momentum build up and leave the stick in a neutral position. When enough speed is built up the pilot will sit in the prone position. With the wind direction set you could try some soaring off the slope that you launched from.

Set your Thermal Height to 9000ft or 3000mtrs

General Tasks

See the UV VGA forum for suggested tasks 1-5.

League Task 6

For a bit of a competitive element a short 50km course has been created. Try to get around in the quickiest possible time. You can do this course as many times as you like, this is a great way of trying to improve your gliding performance.
Practise using the McCreedy settings.
Think about spending most of your time in thermals (rising air) and less time between them (sinking air). Think about what else you can do to improve your performance.

Take off from Wolfsberg and head 5km to the west to Turnpoint Poelling (POE), then head 22km SSE to Lavameund (LVM), then head 16km NNE to Grosser Spieckkogel (GRR)and finally head back 11.9km to Wolfsberg overflying the Runway for a finish.

Points awarded will go into a league table which will be continually updated as pilots improve there scores. The score will be based on the BGA ladder.
